Theranova began its work in a garage at Casa Minunata in 1999 with Jaco Du Plessis. This was ample space for the one orthotist/prosthetist to manufacture these very necessary devices for the few people . As the number of people needing orthotics and prosthetics grew, it soon became apparent that more technicians were needed to keep up with the demand for services. The current space was much too small to accommodate any more technicians, so plans were drawn up and the search began for a new home for Theranova. Theranova was looking for a "new home", so the search began. With the help of Lars Hornberg (co-Founder of the work of Caminul Felix) and Jaco began driving round the city of Oradea – exploring every possibility! Finding at last the most unexpected available site for a work that was going to give new hope and life to so many from now on! An ancient and disused Greek Cemetery. Two acres of past burial grounds, now an overgrown wilderness with the ruins of vaults throughout. An expanse of rubbish and neglect. An eyesore to the city of Oradea and available to anyone who would be prepared to clear and use it and so remove an embarrassment for the authorities. Construction began in July 2001, combining cost effectiveness, Romanian workforce and experience with new technologies in constructing walls, ceilings, windows and doors. The facility is of a unique standard in Eastern Europe and equals any facility of its kind across Europe. The next stage was the installation of machinery and equipment, which is second-to-none and has been provided from Germany. Also hand-tools and work-tables and vast amounts of paint from Sweden. There will be much more mentioned about this tremendous contribution in a later chapter and about the many Sponsors and Supporters from different countries around the world. For now, sufficient to say that all this amazing machinery is brand new. To the untrained eye, it is rather like a walk through a fictional “wonder-land” to tour the work and consulting rooms of Theranova. The opening of this new facility in June 2002 was a highlight, celebrating with many people who had become important to this work, including sponsors and friends, representatives from the local University and doctors from local hospitals. There was still a tremendous amount of work to be done on the grounds surrounding the building. Two acres of rubble and ruins to be cleared and paths and roadways to be laid down for permanent use. Now the whole area of land is a smart and attractive approach to this excellent building. There is a huge expanse of very lovely grass from seed that came from England, suitably selected for this particular type of ground. In a city still striving to re-build and regain its former splendid image this great accomplishment stands out as a prime example. Here now stands Theranova, Prosthetic and Orthotic Centre. A smart, eye-catching red-brick building with blue-tiled roof. It is separated into a dozen or more rooms to provide for work and the fitting of so many appliances for the disabled, as well as offices for consultation. As you walk through this modern and attractive building, you will see, through every window and open door, casts of arms, legs, hands and feet – and more! You will see the anxious faces of the patients, then the joyful faces of those who have been given new hope. You will see this incredible, state-of-the-art facility. Theranova – new therapy – new life!
